to change our world
North Wales Women’s Centre wins half a million pounds to fight inequality.
North Wales Women’s centre has been saved from closure with a half a million pound grant to fight inequality. The Centre, based in Rhyl, has already helped over 2000 women since opening in 2001 and has gained many influential supporters including MEP Glenys Kinnock and several Minsters in the Welsh Government
Jeff Cuthbert, Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, made the announcement this week which will see the Centre as one of only 16 organisations across Wales to be granted funding from the Equality and Inclusion Grant Funding programme. The Minister said: “This funding demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to the principles of fairness and equality and to the further development of equality of opportunity and human rights in Wales.”
North Wales Women’s Centre is located in Rhyl and provides access to information, support and training on issues relating to health wellbeing and work. The centre has worked to improve their health, confidence, and livelihoods of many women – transforming lives and offering hope to women who were previously struggle to cope. The centre provides services to around 80 women each day and is supported by more than 50 volunteers.
Managing Director Gemma Fox said:
“These are precarious times for the voluntary sector and we could not be more delighted at the funding news. Poverty and inequality can wreck lives and rob women of hope. I feel privileged to work in a Centre that provides support and services that help restore hope and enable women to reach their true potential. For that transformative work to be recognised and funded by Government is wonderful for the staff of the centre and the women it serves.”
The grant is for the period 1 April 2014 – 31 March 2017. Its purpose is to fund third sector organisations to contribute to the delivery of the Welsh Government’s strategic equality priorities.
